Veni, vidi, vici | And now? | E agora?

Hello folks! (em português embaixo)

I’m happy to announce that I recently did my Master’s defence here at Universidade Federal de Viçosa! If I’ll be honest, it feels unreal, because remember that I started my Master’s degree in a language I had never spoken before! To be able to say that I’ve finished something like this, with all its challenges, difficulties and hardships, brings a lot of pride to me. So, what’s next? Growing up in Brazil | Crescer no Brasil

Hello folks! (tradução embaixo)

As the Czech proverb goes,

“You live a new life for every new language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once.”

Last week, I did something I could not have imagined myself doing even a year ago. I held a presentation in Portuguese for the first time in my life! It was about my thesis project in general, so sure, a subject I am comfortable with… in English. It made me realise something I kind of had forgotten about.

And yes, the picture should say “you live a new life”.

I speak better Swedish after I moved to Brazil | Melhorei em sueco após mudar pro Brasil

Hello folks! (tradução embaixo)

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said:

Those who know nothing of foreign languages, know nothing of their own.

Me & parents discovering Brazil (a bunch of photos)| Eu e meus pais descobrindo o Brasil (um monte de fotos)

Hello people! I have finally collected all photos, edited them and uploaded them (which takes a lot of time with the slow internet!). These are photos from the 1½ week my parents visited me in Brazil. I had been waiting for this since I moved here in July 2014, so it was absolutely awesome. My crazy, awesome polyglot world. | O meu mundo poliglota bacana e doido.

I’m just going to say it. I don’t even have a Brazilian girlfriend and I’ve managed to learn Portuguese. Alright, so what’s all this sudden excitement about? Well, my parents recently came to Brazil for a week and a half. They suddenly saw a side of me that they have never seen before (and that I had never thought of). 2 years a Portuguese newbie | 2 anos como um novato em português

Hello world! Today marks exactly 2 years since I first jumped into the Portuguese language. With it being my very first Romance/Latin language, it was certainly exciting. Since Portuguese belongs to a language family I had never familiarised myself with before, it really felt like a whole new world!

Merry “Little Christmas”! | Feliz “Natal Pequeno”!

Hi peeps! Olá todo mundo! (tradução abaixo)

You probably wonder if my calendar is broken, but no, in Finland we do indeed celebrate a kind of pre-Christmas (“Lillajul” in Swedish, “pikkujoulu” in Finnish) the day before 1st Advent. People usually start decorating their homes and maybe bring in a small pre-Christmas tree. If I still lived in Holland, I would start decorating, but here in Brazil, I haven’t yet acquired any such, so there’ll be no pre-Christmassy feeling right now at least. A Hong Kong-British Finn & Dutch ex-resident speaking Swedish living in Brazil. Hi. Or terve.

Oioi! A few years ago I remember my Facebook profile containing the line “I’m a Hong Kong-British Swedish speaking Finnish guy in The Netherlands. I didn’t confuse you, did I?”. Well, I have bad news for you if you didn’t follow before. Now it’s even more confusing. Even I’m beginning to find it hard to explain without having to think when “presenting” (more like a speech) myself to others. And I’ve noticed that a lot of people ask more than once about my background, so probably they didn’t get it the first few times. It’s probably for the best; there are plenty other things in the world to concern yourself with than a louco finlandês without a proper identity.

Accepted to university in Brazil!

Hi everybody! Olá todo mundo!

This is my first blog post ever. I’ve never had a blog and I wasn’t going to start one either, but I have friends who have insisted I have one for my future adventures in Brazil, so I conceded. This blog won’t win any beauty contests, so leave now if you might suffer a heart attack.
